The Iron Chancellor
May 10th, 1871
After just nine months and two weeks, the Franco-Prussian War has ended in a German victory. Napoleon III of the Second French Empire has been captured. Otto von Bismarck, known as the Iron Chancellor, has successfully unified Germany into an Empire proclaiming Kaiser Wilhelm I as the new monarch. The balance of power has been destroyed. A bitterly defeated France with an emerging new European power makes headlines. Meanwhile Austria pushes for Ausgleich to keep Hungary from splitting away and now has to deal with another power, Italy who is slowly unifying and stirring up nationalistic feelings near the borders and soon to press claims for more territory. Great Britain continues its limited involvement in mainland European affairs despite many starting to become against it. In Russia, the Czar watches the events unfold while planning to extend the empire and its influence. The Ottoman Empire, decaying and dying now faces a superior giant and may soon have to fight for survival. Morocco maintains its independence but faces extreme French, British, and Turkish interests. With one war over and emerging new nations, one asks itself when tensions boil up again and explode engulfing Europe.May 10th, 1871
